Meet The Team: 2012 Ironman U.S. Championships (NY)

The inaugural 2012 Ironman® U.S. Championship is a new addition the Ironman® circuit, but not new to TeamEN.  The folks below have been studying the course, doing their race rehearsals, taking full advantage out the TeamEN proprietary Heat Pace Calculator and our now ready to make it happen.  Good luck to everyone racing this weekend!

John Withrow

I am married to fellow ENer (Jess Withrow) who happens to be one of the most awesome women on this planet!  Our 2 little boys (JT-6yr old and Luke-4yrs old) will be spending the week with their grandparents in Pittsburgh as Jess and I race in NJ/NY.  I was a former college wrestler and started triathlon 3 yrs ago as a pesonal challenge as it was the exact opposite of everything I was good at athletically.

I was pleasantly surprised to do 12:56:xx at IMLou last yr in my 1st IM, but think I can best that by 30 mins or so if I race to my potential at IMNYC (even with the much tougher run course).

When you see me on the course, I will not be wearing my EN kit as I will be racing along side 24 other people as part of Team ReserveAid (5 of us are in EN).  We are hoping to raise over $200,000 for ReserveAid which is a nonprofit organnization committed to providing financial support to Reserve Service members from all branches of the Military who are called to active duty and are experiencing financial difficulty.  When you see someone on the course in one of our kits, please make sure to give us your awesome EN MoJo as well!   www.reserveaid.org/get-involved/ironman-u-s-championship/

Jess Withrow

I’m a 35 year old mom to two boys, ages 6 and 4, wife to Team EN member John Withrow and, I suspect, the most injury-prone athlete Team EN has ever seen.  Last season John challenged me to join Team ReserveAid and “Tri for Our Troops” at IMLou and I actually ENJOYED training so much that I registered for IMNYC before I made it to the IMLou swim start.  IMNYC will be my second full IM, and likely the most logistically challenging IM I will ever do (so much for the “ease” of doing an IM in my own backyard!).  With all the ways my body has tried to stop me from training for this race, Team EN has been an invaluable resource and source of inspiration and support in getting me there.

Shout-out to my amazing husband with whom I’ll be celebrating TEN years of marriage the day before IMNYC – love you, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate (although a trip to Tahiti would be nice…  )!

Looking forward to seeing those EN kits out on the course – I’ll be the chica in the Team ReserveAid kit screaming, “GO EN!!!!” at all of you!

Rob Mohr

Hi all – I’m a 26 year-old trying to live life to the fullest in NYC. Like all of you, I strangely find the demands of a stressful job and a social life to not be enough… With that in mind, as a nascent runner turned triathlete, I figured it was high time to take the plunge into full distance Ironman. With the first-ever NYC Iron 14 months away at the time, signing up for a race in my backyard seemed to make sense. Then I realized it was in Jersey… and that sitting on a bike for 6 hours wasn’t a joy. Now with the race four days away, I’m glad I signed up and am pumped and ready to rock thanks to all of you in the haus!

John Korossy

This will be my first IM distance triathlon; I started racing in 2009 and have a number of HIMs under my belt and felt the need to “go long” in 2012.  My wife, Helen, and sons Dan (11) and Jake (13) are very supportive of my obsession, er, passion. and all plan to be at the finish line to cheer me on this Saturday the 11th.  I live in central NJ, and am a proud member of the Jersey Shore Tri Club.

I am raising funds for Team First Descents — First Descents offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors (ages 18 to 39) a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives and connect with others doing the same.  If you would consider supporting me it would be appreciated.

I work in business development as a Channel Director for Accenture’s Metro NY office.  Accenture is one of the sponsors of the NYC Oly tri – how cool is that ?!?

Race Swiftly. Team EN!  And thanks to all, esp. RnP, for the insights and help!  Work works!

Lorraine McMillan

Hi, I’m Lorraine McMillan, a proud New Yorker who rides 9W, runs in Central Park, and avoids swimming in Brighton Beach, lol.  I’m very anxious to join the Ironman® club and excited to race in my home state, NJ and my current home, NYC.  I‘m a happily married newlywed who thought last year’s preparation for our wedding was the most intense undertaking imaginable, only to find the preparation for the race to be right up there!  This will be my first Ironman® but I’ve raced in triathlons (including a couple of half ironmans) over the past three years.  I joined EN this year on a referral from friends who are racing for the ReserveAid charity with me (www.reserveaid.org).  I won’t be wearing the EN kit, but hopefully you can recognize me with my race execution ninja skills.  I’m very grateful for coaches Patrick & Rich, the EN family and most importantly, God, who is so good to me.  I look forward to experiencing this journey with EN and I’m ready to make the “Haus” proud!

Jonathan Cannon

Hi all,  I’m Jon or as most people call me Jonny Tales.  It has been a nickname since I was a kid and now my family has all my nieces and nephews calling me that.  First off, I am nothing without my wife Hilary who I have been happily married to since April and I owe her a big thank you for supporting me through the training process.  We recently moved to Los Angeles from NYC and I will be heading back to NYC to tackle my first Ironman.  I can’t think of any place in the world that I love more than NYC, so heading back to race Ironman® NYC will be what I think of as a small homecoming.

Carol Defazio

I am Carol DeFazio and this is my 1st Ironman.  I am a 62 years young Personal Trainer and a “Grammie” to 4 beautiful little ones.  I started running when I was 46 and my daughter was home from college.  I realized how much fun it actually was to run slow and have great conversations with her while running along the beach and boardwalk at the Jersey Shore.  One race and I was hooked.  After 9 marathons, a friend convinced my husband and I to do a triathlon.  That was in 2006.  Sprints became Olys… Olys became Half-Ironman® races.
My husband did Florida last year and when I saw IMNY/NJ was coming this year, I just signed up.  EN has been the BEST!!  Work definitely works.  I feel totally prepared and have no goals other than to finish with a smile (although I wouldn’t mind hearing Mike Reilly call out
my name:-).  The EN community has been a wonderful support system and I look forward to seeing many ENers on the course!

Monique Strange

I’m racing with my non-EN family – my younger sister, Charmaine and my husband, Malcolm Rose. We are coming from Dubai with our 5 kids so jetlag and logistics is going to play a big part in this race! My husband and I are both veterinary surgeons and we run a busy practice working more hours than is sanely possible. As a result, most of my training is on a turbo or treadmill in our spare bedroom. Here’s a photo of us at the airport getting ready to fly over!

George Kruse

Hello everyone. I’m George Kruse, father of two (3 y.o. Olivia and 5 y.o. Alexander) down here in Sarasota, FL. I’ve been with EN throughout this season and IMNYC will be my first Ironman® after only starting triathlon/endurance racing last year. When the opportunity to do my first through the Challenged Athletes Foundation, in the City my wife and I spent many years together, can up, I knew I had to jump on it (what was I think). Two years ago I was topping out at 250+ lbs and hadn’t done 140.6 miles of exercise throughout the preceding decade. Now I’m toeing the line to do it all in one day. My goal is to be the model EN execution ninja all day (and, most likely, night). As long as I hold to my power and pacing I’ve had drilled into my brain, the final time can fall where it may. I‘m looking forward to heading up to NYC with my wife Jessica and testing out this new and exciting course with all of you. See you in New York and good luck to everyone!
