Your path to a next-level season starts now—inside, on the trainer, and fully dialed in.
The OutSeason® is our most powerful phase: 14 weeks of focused bike and run work that gets you stronger without the pressure of long training days. If you’re on the official program, you’ll get four structured workouts each week (bike-focused), weekly Team Zwift sessions, TrainerRoad alternatives, and access to our private community for support and accountability.
If you’re not on the team, you’ll want to be. But if you’re just here to peek under the hood, welcome. Let’s talk gear.
Must-Have Gear
This is your OutSeason® starter kit. These are the tools that make consistency possible—without them, you’re training with one hand tied behind your back.
- Smart Trainer or Fluid Trainer: A smart trainer gives you erg mode, power-based workouts, and immersive experiences. But a solid fluid trainer still works if you’re consistent and disciplined. You don’t need fancy—you need functional.
- Training Apps (Zwift or TrainerRoad): You’ll use these to access our team workouts. Zwift brings community and visuals; TrainerRoad delivers precision and no fluff. Choose what motivates you most.
- Heart Rate Monitor or Power Meter: If you’re not measuring intensity, you’re guessing. Tracking effort is essential for progression and dialing in recovery.
- Treadmill or Reliable Running Setup: A treadmill erases weather excuses and guarantees session quality. If you’re running outside, commit to gear that keeps you warm and upright.
- Fans and Climate Control: Two fans minimum. Vornado, Lasko, whatever moves air. Control the environment, or it will control your output.
Nice-to-Have Gear
These are comfort and efficiency upgrades. They’re not required, but once you have them, you’ll wonder why you waited.
- Bike Setup Upgrades: A riser block stabilizes your front end. A rubber mat catches sweat. A sweat guard protects your bike. Little things that make your setup feel dialed.
- Trainer Desk or DIY Stand: Keep bottles, snacks, and devices within reach. Whether it’s a Wahoo desk or an Amazon knockoff, having a surface you can trust is a game-changer.
- Treadmill-Specific Shoes: A softer treadmill belt wears shoes differently. Having a dedicated pair saves your outdoor shoes and protects your stride.
- Reflective Running Gear & Lights: Early morning or late-night runners need headlamps, clip-on LEDs, or lighted vests. Visibility is non-negotiable.
- Mobility Tools: Foam rollers, lacrosse balls, resistance bands. Use them post-workout or during your warm-up. They’re cheap insurance against tight hips and angry hamstrings.
- Headphones or Speaker Setup: Distraction = motivation. Whether it’s music, race replays, or a podcast, make your sessions fly by.
Bonus Zone Gear
These are high-end or niche tools—awesome to have, but far from essential. Most athletes don’t need them. Some athletes swear by them. If they help you stay motivated, they’re worth it.
- Swim Ergometers (e.g., Vasa): Incredible for technique and swim fitness when the pool isn’t accessible. Also incredibly expensive. Want one? Buy a lottery ticket.
- Blue Light Lamps: If winter darkness tanks your energy, this can help stabilize your circadian rhythm and mood. Great for early risers, night shifters, or anyone living above the 40th parallel.
- Compression Boots or Massage Guns: Help your legs bounce back faster from harder sessions. Great for masters athletes or high-stress work weeks when sleep and recovery are tight.
- HRV Trackers (Whoop, Oura, Garmin Body Battery): Useful for monitoring fatigue and balancing stress. Just don’t let the numbers talk you out of showing up.
- Dryland Swim Tools: Stretch cords, snorkel, paddles, and yoga mats help keep your swim form active during weeks when the pool isn’t an option.
- Core & Mobility Tools: A small collection of gear—foam rollers, bands, mats—can be used year-round to keep your spine, shoulders, and hips functional.
What Makes This Work
The OutSeason is about intensity, not volume. It’s about showing up, hitting the work, and recovering well. The right tools remove friction and excuses—so you can focus on what matters: getting faster when nobody’s watching.
