Not bad for getting lost

Posted by admin On February - 27 - 2008

Before Christina, Staci, Matt and I got caught up in the rainy windy weather. We managed to get lost and end up riding through Pebble Beach on 17 mile drive. It was an amazing a stretch of road.

Day 7 – Santa Clarita to Pasadena

Posted by admin On February - 25 - 2008

Day Seven was meant to be the final epic ride of the week; a 38 mile uphill effort through Angeles Pass followed by a killer descent into Pasadena. While the peloton would do 6 x 4.5 mile loops, we would do one and then watch the finish. All of this, however, was derailed by a huge storm system that hit the

Let it be known that not a single camper was worried about missing the last day of riding…with most folks getting in 23 hours in six days, everyone was ready for a day off.  A few folks braved light rain and cool temps to get in a nice morning run (barely remembered how to do it!); the rest of the group packed up for the final jump to Pasadena.

After some admin time packing bikes and cleaning out the vans, a few campers headed down to the Rose Bowl to watch the final few laps. They got more than they bargained for, with a solo breakaway for four loops (Team Bissel rider) that was finally bridged by George Hincapie…the ultimate winner of the stage. A great way to end a great week!

Day 6 – Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita

Posted by admin On February - 25 - 2008

Today’s route is one of my personal favorites…I know, I have said that each stage of the camp, but this time I really mean it! With a little over 70 miles on our agenda, the course included three Category 4 climbs, one Category 3 climb, and two sprints. This meant you rarely went more than 30 mins without some kind of treat.  Day Six also had some of the nicest descents, with panoramic views of Lake Casitas on the way into Ojai and then a great downhill section into Santa Paula. Nothing like flying along at 28mph with minimal work!

The stage lived up to full yahoo-factor predictions, with sprints lined with spectators, and tons of folks on the climbs. Campers lucky enough to make it up — and over — Balcom Canyon Road were treated to some of the most intense spectating of the tour. Affectionately referred to as “the well”, one camper described the climb at Balcom Canyon as having “the smell of clutch.” You get the idea…topping out at 18%, many a cyclist was relegated to walking up the hill.

Sure a few folks got lost on the other side of Balcom Canyon Road, but our uber-admin team picked everyone up and made sure they joined everyone else in Santa Clarita for the final overnight before Day Seven.
